Tutorial Feedback - Daryl and Aidan

During two of the weeks of tutorials classes, our team met with two past animation course students who also focused and found themselves involved in the world of VR and immersive technologies.  Daryl Randall and Aidan Scott both previously worked on a project focusing on the topic of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) of soldiers after returning home from the frontline of war.  'Zemblanity' is also a passive user experience to play with the mind and emotions of the user and give them certain emotions and feelings of discomfort.  It was beyond helpful to hear from both of them and to receive advice on the best route and steps to enhance our project and keep it on track to succeed and be a hit.  Below are some screenshots from their VR project from 2017.

Daryl

Although Daryl was amazingly helpful to us as a team, most of his advice and guidance came from the perspective of unity and the software behind the actual VR creation.  This is essential knowledge for us but was more taken on board by Cassie as she has taken a huge step into controlling a lot of our effects and unity system.  She is the life blood to our team with this and so she was able to take pointers from Daryl and use these to better and enhance our team's project from the software side so that our eventual output is the best it can possibly be.

Aidan

Aidan gave us some animation and environmental feedback which was very helpful.  The following are the three top notes we took throughout this feedback session.

"Research into start up imagery and assets"

Aidan advised us not to get sucked into all of the details and animation frames but to turn our attention to the other components of our project.  We have been neglecting the 2D sections of our project.  Mainly our posters, the start up screen images and the credits.  Without these, our project might end up great, but if we dont give attention to and plan these things now, our project might end up sandwiched between two pieces of work that have been stressfully through together.

"Umbrella academy – AI character"

Aidan recommended we check out the AI character from the Umbrella Academy series on Netflix.  After researching this character, we seen why this was recommended to us by Aidan.  The characters robotic yet compassionate character.  Her desire to help but also her almost sinister and uncomfortable stares.  This character would have been good for us to discover in our early design stages.  Her actions and style can be used as we figure out further movements and interactions between our AI and our male and girl characters.

"Simplogon"

One of the last things Aidan suggested to us as we continue optimising the scene, is a programme called Simplygon.  Simplygon is 3D computer graphics software for automatic 3D optimisation, based on proprietary methods for creating level of detail through Polygon mesh reduction and other optimisation techniques.  Aidan suggested we could use this software within Unity, to help reduce our poly-count further and enhance our projects render time.

Optimising Models

To optimise our scene even further, myself and our Director, Cassie, decided to start deleting faces for various models in our scene that are never seen by the user.  These are mainly on furniture, large counters, table items, counter items, fridge and kitchen door.  In this blog, I will post the videos of a few of the newly optimised models, some images from the process and explanations from other blogs and videos I watched as to how basic models need to be to ensure our scene is optimised as much as it can be. I found the article from Evermotion on optimising scenes to be very helpful in giving me the knowledge and understanding of why optimisation is such a large part of a project such as ours.  The real time rendering that we will be using within unity is processing a lot of information at one time.  If a project has a lot of textures, geometry and animation, this can be described as an expensive project.  Not that it costs a lot of money, but rather i...

CV and Business Card

Before heading into the big bad world of employment and potential freelance work, it is essential we leaving Undergraduate level with a professional portfolio of components we can use to sell our skills and help put us on the industry map to propel us towards a future career. This is in regards to two main pieces of self promotion.  The CV and business card.  It is important we have these designed, printed and accessible on the night of our end of year show so that company reps, directors and other industry members can view our projects and then take something tangible away from it to remember who we are and what we are capable of. When it comes to CV, I have always been taught through my years of business orientated education that it is simple, clean and not overly creative.  I was always taught that colour is tacky, images are resented and icons are acceptable but need to remain minimal.  When I approached this initial design stage of an updated and a...

Expressions and Animation Testing

As key posing and refining animation have begun and have progressed, myself, Lorna and Megan who are animating our narrative, decided we needed to gather a larger collection of research.  For this research, we wanted to gain both primary and secondary assets that could be used to assist us in giving our characters life, personality and attitude.  We knew that the best way to do this, yes, is the way the voices are recorded and spoken, but from an animation perspective, it all comes down to body language and emotional expressions. With this in mind, we set out to gather our own, and trusted research material that could be used as reference for us as we develop our animations.  Firstly, we captured images of our own faces portraying various emotions as we see them.  Secondly we were fortunate enough to receive a book full of expressions and references from our tutor Henry, and this was so valuable to us and we took many photos of the emotions and shared them on ou...
